Can You Swim With a New or Healing Piercing?

It's summer, you've got a new piercing, and there's a pool right there. So — can you swim with a new or healing piercing? The honest answer is no, you should wait. Submerging a fresh piercing is one of the easier ways to invite irritation or infection, and it's worth understanding why before you take the plunge.

Can You Swim With a Healing Piercing?

No — you should keep a new or healing piercing out of pools, hot tubs, lakes, rivers, and the ocean until it's fully healed. An unhealed piercing is an open wound, and bodies of water (even chlorinated ones) expose it to bacteria, chemicals, and debris that healing tissue isn't ready to handle.

Why Swimming Is Risky for a Fresh Piercing

Different water, different problems — but none of them are good for a healing piercing:

  • Pools: Chlorine is harsh and drying, and it irritates the delicate healing channel. And despite the chemicals, pools still harbor bacteria.
  • Hot tubs: The worst offender. Warm water is a bacterial breeding ground, and many hot tubs harbor organisms that thrive at those temperatures.
  • Lakes, rivers, and the ocean: Natural water carries bacteria, algae, and microorganisms that can cause serious infections in an open wound.

For cartilage piercings the stakes are higher, because they already heal slowly and react strongly to any irritation — the reason we stress protection throughout our cartilage piercing guide. An infection in cartilage is more stubborn and more serious than in a lobe.

How Long Should You Wait Before Swimming?

Wait until the piercing is fully healed, confirmed by your piercer — not just until it stops hurting. That means roughly:

  • Earlobe: 6–8 weeks
  • Septum / nostril: 2–3 months
  • Cartilage (helix, tragus, conch, etc.): 3–12 months depending on placement

Remember that cartilage often looks healed on the surface while still rebuilding inside, so err on the side of patience.

What If You Can't Avoid the Water?

Sometimes a vacation or event is non-negotiable. If you absolutely must, reduce the risk:

  • Use a waterproof bandage (such as a hydrocolloid patch) to seal the piercing off — though this works far better for flat body placements than for ears or septum.
  • Keep your time in the water short and avoid submerging the piercing.
  • Rinse immediately afterward with clean water, then do a saline soak to flush the area.
  • Avoid hot tubs entirely — there's no safe workaround for those.

These are damage-reduction tactics, not a green light — the safest choice is still to stay out of the water until you're healed.

Is Showering Okay?

Yes — showering is completely fine and even helpful. Let clean water run over the piercing, avoid harsh soaps directly on it, and pat dry gently afterward. It's submersion in standing or shared water that's the problem, not clean running water.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long after a piercing can I go swimming?

Wait until the piercing is fully healed and your piercer confirms it — about 6–8 weeks for an earlobe, 2–3 months for a septum or nostril, and 3–12 months for cartilage piercings. Cartilage in particular often looks healed before it actually is, so give it extra time.

Can I swim in a chlorinated pool with a new piercing?

No. Chlorine is harsh and drying on a healing piercing, and chlorinated pools still contain bacteria. Submerging a fresh piercing in a pool can cause irritation and infection, so it's best to wait until you're fully healed.

What should I do if I swim with a healing piercing?

Rinse the piercing with clean water as soon as you get out, then do a saline soak to flush away bacteria and chemicals. Watch for increased redness, swelling, or discharge over the next few days, and see your piercer if anything looks off. Avoid repeating it until you're healed.

Are hot tubs bad for new piercings?

Yes — hot tubs are the riskiest water for a healing piercing. The warm temperature is an ideal environment for bacteria, and there's no reliable way to protect a piercing in one. Avoid hot tubs entirely until your piercing is fully healed.
