Piercing Care

Piercing Aftercare Guide

Everything you need to know to heal your new piercing safely and beautifully.

Before you read this guide

Piercing is a small but sensitive body modification, and proper aftercare is essential for healthy healing. This guide is created for customers who had their piercing performed by a licensed professional piercing studio.

SSZ Piercing does not perform piercing services. We specialize in offering high-quality piercing jewelry designed to support a safe and comfortable healing process.

Before Getting a Piercing

Important precautions
  • Age requirements may vary by state. Minors may need parental consent.
  • If you are pregnant, nursing, or have medical conditions, consult a healthcare professional before getting pierced.
  • Inform your piercer about any medications you are currently taking.
  • Consider your travel plans, as fresh piercings require consistent aftercare.

What to Expect After Your Piercing

During the first few days, it is normal to experience the following. These are typical signs of the body beginning the healing process.

Mild redness or swelling

A small amount of redness and puffiness around the piercing is a normal early response.

Sensitivity or warmth

The area may feel tender or warm to the touch as your body responds.

Clear or whitish discharge

A small amount of clear or whitish fluid (lymph) is normal and forms a light crust.

All of these signs should gradually subside as healing progresses.

How to Clean Your Piercing

Wash your hands

Always start by washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching your piercing.

Apply saline

Use a sterile saline solution or piercing aftercare spray on the area.

Clean gently

Dab the front and back of the piercing using sterile gauze. Don't rub or twist the jewelry.

Remove buildup

Loosen and wipe away any crust without putting pressure on the jewelry.

Pat dry

Gently pat the area dry with clean disposable gauze. Avoid towels or tissues.

Clean your piercing twice daily.

Important Aftercare Tips

Do this

  • Wash your hands before touching the piercing
  • Use sterile saline solution twice daily
  • Sleep on a clean pillowcase, away from the piercing side
  • Stay patient — healing takes weeks to months

Avoid this

  • Remove the jewelry during the healing period
  • Use alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or antibiotic ointments
  • Twist, spin, or play with the jewelry
  • Sleep directly on the piercing
  • Swim in pools, hot tubs, oceans, or lakes
  • Apply makeup, hair products, or skincare to the area

When to Seek Professional Help

Contact a professional piercer or medical provider if you experience:
  • Severe or worsening pain
